Spitfire's Tough Choice by Mystic-Forces Spitfire's Tough Choice by Mystic-Forces
Before I begin my statement, I have something to say: I LOVE "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." As an artist as well as a fan for all things that are animated, this is one of the best cartoons I have seen recently. I love their stories, characters, setting, and sense of humor in this series. I began to notice its popularity through parody comics (example: Veggie55 :iconveggie55:) and flash cartoons (such as HotDiggityDemon's PONY.MOV series), so I started watching this series in Summer 2012. Anyway, now that that's out the way, let me explain my reasons for this comic.

*Warning: the statement you are about to read is based off my First Impression when I watched the following episode this comic was based off.*

So, I was excited to see "Wonderbolts Academy" because Rainbow Dash is one of my favorite characters in this series and it was exciting to see her getting closer to her dream: being a Wonderbolt. Well, on the day I was expecting that premiere, December 8, they showed a different episode "Sleepless in Ponyville." Despite the mixup, I thoroughly enjoyed that episode; it's probably my favorite episode out of the 3rd season.

A week later, I finally saw the Wonderbolts Academy episode, and although it was a very good episode, it wasn't just as good as the last episode. Don't get me wrong. It had a very good story and I love it from beginning to end. I had made some expectations on what the story is about, but thankfully those expectations were never met. I like the introduction of Lightning Dust and what she represents and I like how Rainbow Dash has handle herself throughout the episode as a Wing Pony. My main problem with the episode unfortunately has to do with Spitfire.

I was happy with Spitfire's appearance in this episode. And despite having a raspy voice in this episode, I like her take on being a Drill Sergeant. Plus, there were a few moments (such as the ending) where they were able show Spitfire's usual calm and collective personality that I adore so much. My biggest complaint with Spitfire is this: Why didn't she make Rainbow Dash a Lead Pony in the first place?

Compared to Lightning Dust, Rainbow Dash has accomplished a lot for herself as listed in this parody comic. Not to mention that Spitfire has witnessed some these accomplishments herself; heck she was saved by Rainbow Dash when they first met in person. If the Drill Sergeant was a different pony all together, I would have buy that on why that pony chose Lightning Dust as Lead Pony instead of Rainbow Dash. But since it was Spitfire who was in charge of the training facility, the episode didn't support itself enough with the misuse of continuity.

So I ask again: WHY WASN'T RAINBOW DASH A LEAD PONY IN THE FIRST PLACE?!

Actually, this problem made me reflect to a time where I too wasn't acknowledged for my experience. Okay, a few years back during the summer, I applied to be either a waiter or a bartender at a seafood restaurant. Despite my 4+ year-long experience as a caterer/bartender, the managers back then didn't see my catering skills highly qualified enough to be a waiter, so they made be a busboy. That hurt my pride. Half way through the summer, despite how I became one of the best coworkers they had, they took a waiter, who they hired at the same time as me, and made him a bartender. That infuriated me to no end because no only did the managers overlook my bartending experience, but the new bartender didn't have any experience in bartending beforehand! So in a way, I can relate to Rainbow Dash when she was put in this situation.

After watching this episode, I felt the need to express this matter about Spitfire's decision. But how? I don't make videos on Youtube nor do I have my own blog or whatever. So, I resorted to doing what I do best: making comics. It took a while to think this through, but it all felt worth it in the end.

As I've said, I really do l like this episode. I know I was trying bring out a point (mostly from my own experience and perspective) about not being recognized for your achievements, but a lot of commenters here bring out very good points on why Spitfire made Rainbow Dash a Wing Pony in the first place, to which I happened to agree with. Whether you agree or disagree with Spitfire's decision, my focus on this comic (and so many parody comics beforehand) was to make people laugh and enjoy it for what it is.

Here's the sequel to this comic, "Spitfire's Regret."

Poor Rainbow. Now for critique... For a first comic, this is pretty well done. It has good humour, a variety of expressions, and is that a reference to Toy Story in the final panels? The originality is also quite good, as it offers a spin on Spitfire's original reasoning for picking Lightning Dust over Rainbow Dash. The use of the 8 ball is has a big impact in originality overall. Technique... This is where I get a bit more picky. While you have a decent set of backgrounds, and the colours for each character look accurate, the outlines of the characters are a little bit grainy, and some areas such as the ear could use more refining. That aside, I do like the detail put into the eyes and the eyelashes. Impact overall? A good spin on the shows cannon, a variety of poses and expressions, and a very hilarious Rainbow Dash in the final panel. Overall, great comic :iconrainbowdashlaplz:

This is an exceptional comic, giving us a glimpse of what might have been going on behind the scenes. Most of the quality is a high standard but at places such as the ear and in pannel 4, there could be a bit of work that needs to be done. But, however, the quality of spitfires suit is impecable. The fact that it goes over all of rainbow dash' accomplishments does offer quite a bit of humor and build up to where spitfire pulls out the 8 ball. The funniest bit, for me, was spitfires very satisfied face in the second last pannel, that the 8 ball could fix everything. Overall, and excellent and quite humorous comic!

Thank you! Yeah, I can't be Veggie55 liked my first MLP comic! SO AWESOME! (Dang, I wish I could find that Rainbow Dash icon for that!)

I know it's been a while, but I have written a few shares of parody comics beforehand, mostly in video games. I was one of the 3rd place Winners for TeamFourStar's Fan Art Contest for my entry, "Super Frieza Bros."

As you explicate so well, Dash has already demonstrated great leadership abilities. What she needed to demonstrate now was great following or teamwork abilities.

Hilarious comic, though, definitely watching for more.

Actually, there was no mixup regarding the airdates of the episodes. "Sleepless in Ponyville" and "Wonderbolt Academy" aired on the correct dates.

A magic 8 ball? That would explain a lot as to why Spitfire picked who she did for the lead in Dashie's team.

It took a while to fill that gap how Spitfire came to that decision despite all of Rainbow Dash's accomplishments. The magic 8-ball seemed like the the perfect plot device for this.

I like to think of it like this:

Spitfire KNOWS Dash can lead already. Dust hasn't had her shot at this point to see if she's leadership material. By placing an experienced leader under Dust's command, she can use Dash's judgement as well as her own to decide if Dust should keep the position or not.

Obviously, they both decided she sucked as a leader and is a bad pony. :icontrollestiaplz:

I like to think that Rainbow was not the lead pony because she needed to learn how to take orders, however that did not work when the pony giving the orders did not have the foresight to prevent bad situations.

Pretty cool one.

I think Spitfire gave this work to RD since she already knew Rainbow was a capable leader; she wanted to test her capacity to work under another pony's orders.

I also agree with that.
Rainbow seems like a natural leader. But she's also very proud and brash. So, learning a little humility and subordinations should be good for her. That's what I thought to be the real reason behind Spitfire's decision.

And that's also why Spitfire made Lightning Dust a leader; she already knew LD was a very capable flyer, but had to test her leading skills and how well she'd work with others.
